Last week, after clips showing Mr Johnson getting stuck on a zip wire in Victoria Park, near the to the Olympic site, became an internet sensation, the Prime Minister was forced to admit that his former school mate: "defies all forms of gravity".
"No, of course not, because I have got four years of mayor of London ahead," he added. "Perhaps this is the moment to knock this once and for all on the head."
Mr Cameron also played down Mr Johnson's chances of replacing him at 10 Downing Street, telling LBC radio: "I think Boris has played an absolutely brilliant role as Mayor. I think London is very happy to have him. I think he has got a huge amount to offer the country."
Asked about reports that the relationship between the two men is strained, he said: "I have probably spoken to Boris every day since the Olympics.
"We work together extremely well. I think he does a great job for London and I think there is more he can do."
Asked if he would rather pair up with Mr Johnson or Nick Clegg, the Deputy Prime Minister, in an Olympic row boat, he went for the Mayor, saying he had seen him on a rugby field.
"For weight and strength, probably Boris," he said. The two men were at Eton at the same time, although Mr Johnson was three years ahead of Mr Cameron.
