SEATTLE -- New York third baseman Alex Rodriguez had to leave the Yankees' game against Seattle in the eighth inning Tuesday after being hit on the left hand by a fastball from Mariners ace Felix Hernandez.

After the game, Rodriguez was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a non-displaced fracture in his left hand.
It was a bit of inexplicable wildness for former Cy Young Award winner Hernandez, who hit three of the final five batters he faced, Ichiro Suzuki and Derek Jeter before A-Rod.
Rodriguez immediately grabbed his left hand with his right, fell on the ground on his back and began writhing in pain.
The medical crew and manager Joe Girardi were quick on the spot, and after a few moments, Girardi had Jayson Nix take over as a pinch runner at first base.
There was no immediate word on the severity of Rodriguez's injury.
The Yankees, down 3-1 at the time, didn't have to face Hernandez after that, but a one-run rally in the eighth inning left New York one run down before losing 4-2.
Facing his third batter in relief of Hernandez in the eighth, Lucas Luetge also buzzed a pitch near Raul Ibanez's head that sent the Yankees veteran to the ground before striking out the left fielder to end the top half of the inning.
