Grey and wet - the outlook for the rest of the Olympics

Dan Williams, a spokesman, said: "Changeable weather is set to stay at least for the short term. We are not looking at any prolonged sunshine for a while now."

Despite the recent hot spell, saturated ground has not recovered from the last deluge, and is primed to flood during severe spells of rain.

The Environment Agency has issued three flood alerts for the South-west, one of the worst-hit areas during last month’s floods.

The miserable outlook follows a brief burst of glorious summer sunshine which saw widespread temperatures in the mid-80s.

But as rain sweeps the country again, experts said this week will feel much cooler than average for the beginning of August.

Jonathan Powell, forecaster for Vantage Weather Services, said: “We have the same problem of slow-moving rainfall.

“August is looking dreadful,” he said. “Apart from the odd spike of hot weather, the whole month will be cooler than average with this picture of persistent heavy rain really keeping the theme.”

Jim Dale, forecaster with British Weather Services, said the problem was that the jet stream, a band of hot air, appears to have moved south again.

“The jet stream has moved further south again and we think that the first half of August is going to be a changeable, cooler, mixed regime," he said.

"There is no chance of a repeat of the hot weather we have just enjoyed in the near future. It is turning out to be a very unconvincing summer.”
