Mark Cavendish's father: 'Too much was expected of London 2012 road race lottery'

Speaking from his home in the Isle of Man, David Cavendish said the whole island was still proud of Mark despite the failure and refused to blame team tactics after Great Britain's crack unit of riders failed to get the Manx paceman in position for a sprint.

"I don't see it as a failure on the part of the team, failure to win a medal but in terms of tactics and team performance they did the best they could but they are against 200 other riders," he said.

The team had attempted to control the 156-mile race from the beginning, riding in formation ahead of the main group of riders in the road race.

But they were beaten by a group who slipped away during the run in to London and, despite the efforts of Wiggins in particular, the British riders could not get back in touch to allow Cavendish to sprint for the line.
