Olympic tickets to go back on sale to end embarrassment of empty seats

Locog spokesman Jackie Brock-Doyle said: “We talked to the international federations yesterday and we were able to put about 3,000 tickets back into the pot. We will carry on doing that session by session, talking to the accredited groups and asking if we can release some of their tickets back to the public.

“Wherever we can we will put more tickets up for sale the night before.”

The tickets will be put on sale as soon as they become available, meaning sports fans will have to keep checking the official 2012 website. Locog insisted the tickets will be in all price brackets, not just the most expensive ones.

On Sunday night around 600 tickets were returned by gymnastic federations, with 700 for beach volleyball, 100 for swimming, and others for the handball and equestrian events.

But because some of the empty seats are in accredited zones for people with security clearance only, Locog cannot sell those seats to the public and so some seats are likely to be empty throughout the Games.

Locog has also made changes to the way athletes’ friends and family tickets are distributed after many competitors complained that they could not get seats for their parents to watch them compete, despite empty seats at their events.

Tickets will now be made available in the athletes’ village through a priority lane for athletes who sometimes have only hours to arrange tickets when they qualify for finals.

Meanwhile Locog also insisted a problem with seating collapsing at some of the venues has been resolved overnight. Spectators at the hockey arena and at the rowing at Eton reported seats falling apart after they took part in Mexican waves on Sunday.

Locog said the problem had been with spot-welding on seats in some of the temporary venues, and reported that 200,000 seats installed by the same contractor had been checked overnight and given the all-clear.
