Revellers at Notting Hill Carnival in west London were hit by a few showers but escaped the worst of the weather and enjoyed some warm sunshine when the clouds had passed.
Temperatures climbed to 22.5C at Heathrow in London and reached 21.3C in central London, but East Anglia and the South East enjoyed the driest day.
When the country returns to work tomorrow, the weather will pick up across the country, forecasters said.
Some sunshine is expected, with temperatures set to nudge the low 20Cs, before a band of showery rain returns on Wednesday, the first day of the Paralympic Games.
But the end of August will not necessarily spell an end to the sunshine, with the possibility of an Indian Summer on the cards.
Helen Chivers, forecaster with the Met Office, said: “There are some quite strong signs that at the end of the week we’ll get high pressure building across southern parts of the UK, and high pressure means fine weather.”
The Met Office has predicted that this summer could be the wettest ever recorded.
