Ben Ainslie sailed his dinghy Rita up the Thames, past London landmarks including the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye before the vessel goes on display at the National Maritime Museum in Cornwall.
The 35-year-old won his fourth gold medal in consecutive Olympics at London 2012 to become the most successful Olympic sailor ever.
Ainslie, who had the honour of carrying the flag for Team GB at the Olympic closing ceremony, paid tribute to the support he'd received from all quarters of British society.
"The Princess Royal awarded me my medal, that was very special - she also did that in China in 2008. David Cameron came down and showed his support, so we've been very fortunate to have so much support, and not just from important dignitaries and celebrities but most importantly from the every day people, and that is what's made this event so special".
