Families Believe It's Long Overdue
Fremont, NE - Boy scouts and their families came together as one Saturday to celebrate the opening of a new storm shelter.
"It absolutely gives me peace of mind," said scout mom Arnell Petrzilka.
At Camp Cedars, there's a safer place to turn in the event of a tornado.
"You can actually prepare for storms."
The Haddix Trading Post and Scott Storm Shelter opens four years after a devastating tornado in Little Sioux, Iowa. The destruction leveled a camp there and killed four boy scouts, including Petrzilka's son, Ben. She believes the shelter is long overdue.
"When you come to camp and drop off your children at camp you should be able to pick them up at the end of the week."
The new shelter is equipped with a number of safety features. It's big enough to fit 400 people, houses an emergency generator and is strong and sturdy.
"The design for the structure is made out of concrete," said Camp Cedars Chairman Mike Mayne.
It's a building material that will allow the Petrzilka's to feel more comfortable as their young son, Jackson, becomes a scout there.
"He doesn't know what wasn't here," said Petrzilka. "He thinks it's a part of camp, which makes him feel comfortable, too."
The new shelter measures more than 3,300 square feet below ground level. It also serves a medical facility inside.
