Chinese police launch manhunt for 'Chinese Rambo'

"The security guard was shot in the right arm," Zhu Xiaoying, who runs a shop opposite the bank, told the China Daily. "It scared everyone, and no one else dared to stand in his way."

Following Friday's shooting, police released a detailed description of Mr Zhou claiming he was 1m 67 tall and had "a junior middle school education".

"He has a strong Chongqing accent, relatively dark skin, and a scar on his right eyebrow," the China Daily reported.

Another newspaper said Mr Zhou had "double eyelids and [a] long and broad face, with black moles on his right eyebrow and left ear." The Beijing News said Mr Zhou was renowned for his "accurate marksmanship".

Reports suggested police believe the fugitive's "killing spree" may have started in April 2004 when one person was killed during a 70,000 yuan bank heist in Chongqing.

The following year two people were killed in the same city when a robber opened fire while making off with some 170,000 yuan. Mr Zhou has also been linked to shootings in Hunan and Jiangsu provinces.

Sunday's Shanghai Daily carried unconfirmed reports that one policeman had been shot in the chest and killed during the "forest hunt" for Mr Zhou.
