Cracking Down on Drunk Drivers

Omaha city prosecutor announces new plan to keep residents safe

CREATED 8:26 PM

Omaha, NE - Keeping drunk drivers off the roads has been a priority for Omaha City Prosecutor Marty Conboy for the past 30 years. And on the heels of his retirement, he's announcing a new proposal he and a nationwide committee drafted to keep drivers across the nation safe.

"We'd like to see a law that is really truly uniform where if you go across the state lines you don't have a better deal and that's what happens now," Marty Conboy said.

Conboy along with other prosecutors, law enforcement officers, and judges across the nation came up with 24 recommendations to streamline DUI laws. Some of those recommendations have to do with punishment, making it a crime to refuse a sobriety test, interlock ignition, and many others.

"Our goal is to try now and get that sent out to legislators throughout the country and here in Nebraska as well and to try and get that adopted," Conboy said.

Although he won't be tackling this issue from the city prosecutor's office come August 31st, Conboy says he'll remain active and admits there's still a lot of work to be done. "The enforcement issues, the legislative issues, the court issues, treatment issues are important how we deal with chronic repeat offenders is a maddening problem."
