Edinburgh Festival 2012: Edinburgh International Festival begins with human light show

People are being encouraged to take part in the event by carrying hand-held lights as they watch. On top of the 300 choreographed runners, 800 audience members will each be given a light. They will walk around a set route over the hills which is 3.2km long and will take two hours to complete.

"You don't get the chance to put on a light suit and pretend to be in a science fiction film very often," he said.

The suits will be remote-controlled by the company and will deliver pulses of colour. The runners will then move around the hills in specific patterns.

Edinburgh International festival director Jonathan Mills said: "It brings sport and science and art and environmental sculpture all together in one big celebration of community."

Speed of Light will take place every evening over the next month as part of London 2012.

The Edinburgh International Festival attracts over 3000 artists from 47 different countries and includes theatre, dance, art and music. Events will continue tomorrow with a concert at Usher Hall.
