Priti Patel MP said: “It’s shocking that Gordon Brown is claiming thousands for travel, but rarely turns up to speak or even vote on his constituents' behalf, in the Commons.
“It’s time for Gordon Brown to either step up to the plate or stand down from Parliament.”
Mr Brown’s office made over £2.6 million, over £142,000 in his MPs salary, almost £200,000 in Public Duty Costs Allowance for 2010/11 and 2011/12; and over £2.3 million for speeches, travel, accommodation and other activities.
In Mr Brown’s entry in the registry of member’s interest he makes clear that he has not received many of these payments personally.
Instead many are “being held by the Office of Gordon and Sarah Brown for the employment of staff to support my ongoing involvement in public life”.
Last night a spokesman for Mr Brown’s office questioned the figures.
He said: "It is obvious that when Mr Brown travels to London from his family home in Scotland for meetings, visits, briefings and events in London, fulfilling his duties, he has expenses for travel by aeroplane or train which have to be - and are - fully accounted for, and for accommodation.
"As for speeches and writings, the newspaper should now know perfectly well that not a single penny of the money goes to Mr Brown personally.
"Every single penny goes to Mr Brown and Mrs Brown’s charitable and public service work.
"In fact because Mr Brown has renounced the Prime Ministerial Pension – which again he is entitled to by law – his only personal income is his salary as an MP.”
