New Police Chief Reacts To Weekend Violence; New Gun Crime Ad Campaign Begins

CREATED 3:53 PM

Omaha, NE - Just six days into his new job, Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer says he has a strategy to deal with gun-related violence.

Over the weekend seven people were shot--two of them died--at five different crime scenes in Omaha.

Monday, Schmaderer met with Mayor Jim Suttle to brief him on the shootings. A news release from the mayor's office says: "He (the new chief) has a plan for targeting this type of violence and is moving ahead with his strategy."

He's unveiling a new ad campaign Tuesday to get illegal guns off the street.

The Omaha Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have put up billboards and Metro bus signs with the messages: "Report Gun Crimes" and "1 Firearm + 1 Arrest = $500."

The billboards are near 38th and Ames, North 58th and NW Radial Highway, North 30th and Myrtle, and South 26th Avenue and Q Street. Callers can remain anonymous and tips will be investigated by the OPD Firearms Squad.

Schmaderer also said his OPD was "streamlining processes" in the homicide and gang units to deal with shootings.

KMTV Action 3 News will cover the news conference Tuesday and is reporting on the weekend shootings tonight at five, six and 10pm.
