Edmund Hillary helping an un-named team member across a crevasse
Hillary helps an un-named team member across a ladder bridge over a crevasse above Camp III in the Western Cwm during the reconnaissance. This photograph was taken by expedition leader John Hunt. Three years after the Everest success he retired early from the army and spent the rest of his life in public service, mainly concerned with young people and with mountaineering, but also with the rehabilitation of prisoners and their early release on proof of good conduct.
Hunt undertook difficult government assignments in Nigeria and in Northern Ireland. His lifetime of service was recognised by his appointment as a life peer and by the Order of the Garter. Lord Hunt was president of the Royal Geographical Society between 1976 and 1980.
- The “Royal Geographical Society in Asia from 1862 to 1955” exhibition runs until September 16 at the National Geographic Store.
