European scientists have unveiled the recipe for a perfect sand castle – a combination of 99 per cent sand and one per cent water. Physicists in Paris and Amsterdam spent hours building sand castles in an attempt to discover the mathematical formula for a stable and long-lasting tower. They concluded that if the “optimum concentration” of water is used, “capillary bridges” are formed between sand grains allowing towers to be built measuring up to five metres in height.
