It's more than 'just a car' - it's the start of a love story
Elkhorn, NE -- The Douglas County Sheriff's office is on the hunt for a car thief. It's not just any car that they're looking for, it plays an important part in a military man's love for his country and his bride-to-be.
The car is much more than something to get around in, the Monte Carlo Super Sport is the beginning of a love story. "I know at the end of the day it's just a car but when you have that much emotional involvement sometimes it's more than just a car," admitted a heartbroken Corporal Seth Swerczek.
Monday morning started with a nightmare - someone got away with the Marine's 1986 Monte Carlo SS. It's a black car with some rust and dings, but thousands of precious memories.
Cpl. Swerczek explained, "I had my first date with my now fiancee Bryanne in it, and I had a lot of fun in it.."
The car is so valuable to Seth, he wanted to take it for a last spin before being deployed to Afghanistan last fall. "The breaks were shot and the fuel pump was bad so, I couldn't drive it, and I was pretty hurt," he said.
Little did he know, friends and family worked weeks on end to re-build the car while he was serving for seven months. Seth said his soon-to-be brother-in-law Nathan, completely built a new engine, "He took a 350 engine, he built a really strong motor for me ground-up from scratch, and he had the transmission completely re-done."
The Marine's homecoming party came with a big surprise. Home video captured the shocked Marine, and at times speechless. Cpl. Swerczek said, "As it came closer I could hear it running and I could tell they did something to it, and the license plate said "SWERZ SS" and I was like,'Wow that is my car'!"
Swerczek believes the thief knew just how fast of a car it is, perhaps even followed him home. He has no idea just who would target a hero. "Who's going to steal a car that you know, I hadn't painted it yet. It had some body work issues, you know. My worst fear it's that somebody that heard it run, they knew it had a good motor, and you know it's hours somewhere being chopped up for parts," said the devastated car owner.
He fears it's the car's in the hands of someone who won't appreciate the love story of two high school sweethearts that comes with it. Swerczek and his fiancee Bryanne had much more planned for the Monte Carlo, "We thought a really cool part of the wedding would be to include us driving away from the church, starting a marriage together as we started our relationship together kinda driving away in the car."
Corporal Swerczek's Monte Carlo SS is black with red trim on the bottom. It is a 2-door car with tinted windows. The license plate is "SWERZ SS". If you see it call 911.
