Neighbors say man threw cat from second-story apartment
Omaha, NE - The trauma a cat at the Nebraska Humane Society experienced is obvious by how often he meows. Police say last week someone threw the cat from the window of an apartment building near 67th and Blondo.
"There was a cat just laying over there on the ground and you could hear it just crying and crying and everybody was standing out here and they were just angry," Lisa Agans said.
Lisa Agans says a resident opened their window and threw the helpless cat onto the ground. Angry neighbors called 911, the Nebraska Humane Society stepped in to take care of the cat and investigate the animal abuse. "We're trying to make contact with anyone who may have been in that apartment and knows what happened and so far we've been unable to do that but it is an open investigation," Pam Wiese said.
Thursdays's incident is the third reported case of animal cruelty in the past week. Just days ago officers say Robert Rogers put a feral cat in a sack and shot it. Police also arrested Anthony Stevens for allegedly kicking a Chihuahua off a retaining wall...killing the dog. The recent string of animal abuse has officials at the Nebraska Humane Society stunned. "I don't know why we've seen more of it, we've seem to have gotten three pretty high profile cases in a short period of time and that's worrisome," Wiese said.
Pam Wiese says unless the animal is repeatedly beaten, tortured, or mutilated, the person responsible for throwing the cat from the window will only get charged with a misdeameanor. Lisa Agans says that's not enough. "I'd like to see tougher penalities because a person who can do that can do a lot of other horrendous things."
