Tia Sharp: Mother visits makeshift shrine

He was accompanied by his father, Stephen Carter, who replied: "There was no reason".

He then turned to the media and added: "No child deserves this, especially my grand daughter."

Hazell, 37, will appear in court on Monday charged with killing Tia, who was last seen at his home in New Addington, south London, more than a week ago.

His partner, Tia's grandmother Mrs Sharp, 46, who was also questioned on suspicion of murder, was released on bail.

The couple's next-door neighbour Paul Meehan, 39, who was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, was also released pending further inquiries.

The terraced council house remained cordoned off today as police continued their investigations.

Local well wishers expressed shock and anger that the school girl's body had not been found during earlier searches of the property in which she was last seen.

Many said that they did not believe Mrs Sharp could return to the estate.

Michael Cox, 37, said: "New Addington is a very close community and tensions are high here and are likely to remain so.

"I can't see how she could live a normal life in the area with all that has happened."

Jason Moore, 32, a former neighbour, said: "We want answers about this, I think it's all that we deserve.

"Natalie must be heartbroken, to lose her kid like that, and then to see her mum taken in for it?

"I don't know where Christine will go now."

Hazell was arrested on Friday, hours after Tia's body was discovered in the loft. It is not known how she died.

Metropolitan Police South East London Area Commander Neil Basu said "human error" was to blame for not locating the body sooner and has apologised to Miss Sharp, from Mitcham, south London.
