Liverpool 0 Arsenal 2: match report

Although Suarez was a threat to Arsenal throughout, the Uruguayan rarely tested stand-in goalkeeper Vito Mannone and Liverpool only went close, aside from three half-hearted penalty appeals, when youngster Raheem Sterling struck the post on 31 minutes.

Arsenal always carried more threat, with summer signings Podolski and Cazorla standing out.

The impressive Abou Diaby was also central to Arsenal’s victory, with the French midfielder running the game for Wenger’s team.

Arsenal had to wait until the 31st minute before they took the lead, however.

The goal was sparked by Thomas Vermaelen cutting out Steven Gerrard’s pass to Suarez, with the Arsenal captain laying the ball off to Podolski 30-yards from his own goal.

Podolski quickly fed Cazorla before sprinting down the left flank, where the German received the ball back sixty yards further down the pitch from the Spaniard before he guided a left foot shot past Pepe Reina from 12 yards.

It was a classic breakaway goal and Giroud had the chance to repeat the trick three minutes later, when he was released by Diaby before shooting horribly wide from ten yards.

Liverpool lacked ideas and Arsenal upped the pressure after the interval, with Kieran Gibbs forcing a save from Reina after being teed up by Podolski.

And the second goal that Arsenal deserved came on 68 minutes when Podolski released Cazorla inside the penalty area with a clever pass.

Cazorla took a touch before shooting past Reina, who allowed the ball to squirm through his body for his latest mistake of a poor season so far.
