The Queen and Prince Philip brave cold to watch Braemar Gathering

Prince Philip wore a kilt with tweeds while the Queen, who is patron of the games, wore an outfit of lilac and ivory. She sat between the Duke and the Prince of Wales, sharing a joke as they watched the children’s sack race.

The Games, held at the Princess Royal and Duke of Fife Memorial Park, take place on the first Saturday of every September and regularly attracts visitors from around the world to the village.

Light showers and cool temperatures of around 10 degrees C were forecast for the event, sparking fears that the Duke would stay away because of his poor health.

But he appeared to be in good spirits as he watched the games with the Queen

Last weekend, the Duke made his first public appearance since leaving hospital when he attended a church service at Crathie Kirk.

In June he was treated in hospital for a similar infection the day after braving cold, wet and windy conditions on the royal barge for several hours during the Diamond Jubilee Pageant on the River Thames.

Philip, 91, spent five nights in London's King Edward VII Hospital and missed some of the key celebrations of a special bank holiday weekend marking the Queen's 60-year reign.

A spokesman for the Braemar Gathering said: “We were delighted to see the Duke again. He has been a great supporter of this event, as has the Queen.”
