Jade Jones and Martin Stamper keep Olympic taekwondo medal hopes alive

“The points went on really good and the plan was perfect,” said Jones. “I didn’t feel at my sharpest so I will need to up it a bit this afternoon but my tactics were perfect,” said Jones. “I have studied all the fighters so I will go through the tactics again and get on it again.

“It was amazing, a crazy wonderful atmosphere. I wasn’t expecting it. Everyone was shouting my name.”

Stamper’s fight was tied after two rounds, with both fighters attempting a variety of kicks but failing to hit their targets in a cagey opening, with Stamper picking up a penalty.

The Liverpool fighter however took the lead with a chest kick in the third round and then landed a head kick to establish a four-point lead. Nuenz’s coach challenged whether the kick had connected with the head but the video review panel turned down the appeal.

Nuenz reduced the deficit with two chest kicks while Stamper lost a point by conceding a second penalty. The British fighter however clinched his place in the quarter-finals with another chest kick to win 5-2.

Stamper said: “It is really hard to score in the body armour because they are brand new so I just needed to bide my time. I was doing the right things and didn’t think he was getting that close to me.

“I covered well and just waited and was patient. He was the first one to crack and took a risk and I countered and obviously he was open to the head then and I got him with a nice front leg reaction.

“I was so excited when I came out I wanted to dance. It might have looked a boring fight but the supporters kept behind me.”
