His boss and owner of the ice cream shop speaks out.
Omaha, NE – The owner of the ice cream shop Gilberto Hernandez-Vazquez worked for tells us his employee was a hard-working, kind-hearted man.
But the fact that Vazquez was working late the night he was murdered, worries him.
Jose Gaytan, owner of La Michoacana plans to sit down and chat with all his pushcart vendors that it just isn’t safe to sell ice cream after dark.
63-year-old Vazquez worked for Jose Gaytan, selling ice cream for the shop in the South Omaha Neighborhood.
Gaytan says after Vazquez was gunned down Thursday night he’s asking all his 10 other vendors to return to his shop before the sun sets.
He says Vazquez would usually work till after dark hoping to make some extra money and that Vazquez had been beaten and robbed in 2009. That was the only incident since Thursday in the last six years Gaytan has owned the business.
But now after a life has been taken Gaytan doesn’t want to take any chances. He says if his workers don’t come back before dark then they won’t be working with him anymore.
“I probably am not going to let them work anymore here because I’m not taking any chances, they are going to take another life just because they want to stay a little later,” says Gaytan.
