Claire Austin, forecaster at MeteoGroup, said the best of the holiday weekend weather was likely to arrive tomorrow, with conditions worsening again on Bank Holiday Monday.
"Tomorrow is probably going to be the best day of the three," said Miss Austin.
"Most places should be dry and fine although there may be one or two showers. Temperatures may reach 70F (21C) in the south east.
"But on Monday things will get worse again. It is going to turn quite windy and we have a band of heavy rain moving eastwards.
"The worst areas will be western areas including the south-west, Wales and western Scotland, which will see the heaviest rain and wind."
Almost two million Britons are likely to escape the mixed conditions by travelling abroad.
There was heavy rain in parts last night but a threatened month's downpour in 24 hours did not arrive.
