Papillion, NE -- Denzel Washington remembered the Titans. The mega-star surprised students Friday at Papillion La Vista South High School with a video message. The student body has been begging him to come to their school, and they finally got their response.
The "Titans" want Denzel Washington to celebrate their high school's 10th anniversary. The high school students want him, because of that famous 2000 movie "Remember The Titans". The Hollywood A-Lister didn't show up in person, but gave them the next best thing, along with a message that's sure to keep every student at school this year.
"Titans, how are you?" began the famed "Remember the Titans" actor.
The Titans' kick-off to the football season included a very special shout-out from Denzel Washington. Denzel recorded the heartfelt message while on-location, shooting a film with Mark Wahlberg, in Louisiana. "I just want to thank you guys, first of all, from the bottom of my heart. I saw the YouTube video and it really touched me personally," said Washington.
Julia King is a student. She was thrilled and surprised that Washington would answer their request. "He really said it from his heart he wasn't like 'Oh from another school in Nebraska'," said the high school senior.
Many student's didn't know what was going on when the video message began. Nolan Nezum said, "I thought he was going to walk right through that door like 'Surprise!' and be here."
Tashinga Muchegwa chimed in, "I thought it was a sorry video, like 'Sorry I can't come'."
"I promise you, I promise you, I am going to show up in Omaha one of these days. I'm not even going to tell you when. You'll be in school, I'm going to make sure it's when you're in school and I'm going to just walk in and surprise all you guys," added Washington.
Papillion La Vista South teacher Matt Baker said Denzel's response is a bigger message for the students. He explained, "It shows the student's hard work and they really pushed for something that they want, for something they believe. To see their work come out and see Denzel recognize that is really big for us."
Student Isiah Martin said, "To have a Hollywood celebrity come out and come visit our school in small Papillion, Nebraska - that's something that's not every day so we're looking forward to that ."
All the student's said they're very appreciative that Denzel would take time to record a response and they can't wait for his visit. "It's going to be pretty cool. I'm not missing any school now," exclaimed Muchegwa with excitement.
Denzel closed his message to his fellow Titans by saying, "I can tell you this - from the bottom of my heart, I will always remember the Titans. Always. See ya!"
Washington told students that he will be in Omaha to watch his son play football with Sacramento's UFL team the Mountain Lions. The Sacramento Mountain Lions take on Omaha Nighthawks October 23rd.
