Omaha, NE - The U.S. Attorney for Nebraska says 13 people have been accused in a federal indictment of conspiring with a Mexican drug cartel to deal methamphetamine in Omaha - including the owner of Gomez's Tire and Auto Shop in Omaha.
Deborah Gilg said that 12 of those indicted have been arrested. She said six are in the U.S. Illegally.
"As a result of this takedown today we feel confident that we have slowed down the meth drug trade in the metro area," said Gilg. "Hopefully we have reduced any violence that would have been associated with it."
The indictments were announced the same day that officers from eight different law enforcement agencies in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa executed search warrants in the case, including one at Gomez Auto Sales.
Authorities seized 30 cars from the lot, believed to be a front for the drug ring.
"I always thought that the guy was an above board guy and it was the last thing I figured would be happening here," said neighbor Dwain Mansik. “It happens a lot in our neighborhoods, but not here."
Neighbors say the seizures started in the early morning hours and law enforcement was still on the scene late into the afternoon.
Gilg told reporters the meth was intended to be distributed within the Omaha Metro area.
If convicted, those indicted face up to life in prison.
