Drug use in High School Becoming More Common

CREATED 4:28 PM

Several incidents at South High School have students and parents on edge.

"As a parent this is supposed to be a secure area."

More than a week ago, a teacher was hit by a BB pellet.

The teacher was outside of the school, with the marching band.

Police think it was random, but now comes word of a cocaine arrest.

"I'm very shocked, South is not a bad school at all."

A 16 year old, cuffed for possession of cocaine. After a search, police found ten baggies, totaling about six grams.

The student reportedly showed off the drugs in the cafeteria.

"It's frightening, because I have a freshman, as a parent I was never informed of this by the school, yes it's shocking."

But drug use at high school, may be more common than parents think.

The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, reports 17%, more than 2 million students, drink, smoke or use drugs the school day.

In public and private schools, 60% of students reported drugs at their school.

At South high, one former student can't understand how the drugs even got in.

"I think it's very surprising considering how much security and how much the teachers care about the students in South I mean if they catch you out of class they send you right back to class it's like getting caught very easily."
