Ex-Coach Of Omaha Chiefs Headed To Prison For Sexually Assaulting Girl

CREATED 3:40 PM

Omaha, NE - The man who ran Omaha Chiefs football for some 40 years will now spend about that much time behind bars.

Judge Leigh Ann Retelsdorf sentenced 64-year-old Darrel Meyer Wednesday to 30 to 80 years in prison. He sexually assaulted a young girl--she's now 12--over a six-year period. She had no connection to the Chiefs.

Meyer is eligible for parole in 30 years. He'll be 94 years old.

Prosecutors said Meyer told the girl if she told anyone about their relationship, he would kill himself. He also bought her jewelry and a cell phone.

Last year, he was hospitalized after a suicide attempt. One month earlier--about the time he was arrested--his wife took out a protection order, saying he had shown "extreme violence" and she feared he would "either kill himself in front of me or kill us both due to the nature of the case."

Meyer pleaded guilty to two counts of first degree sexual assault of a child. A first degree sexual assault charge involves penetration of any kind. In exchange for the plea, prosecutors dropped 26 lesser charges of possession of child pronography.

Meyer reportedly showed the pre-teen pornography, then would sexually assault her.

One of Meyer's neighbors is surprised she's watched him interact with many kids. "I see kids laughing, playing, giggling, (he) takes them on his cart and rides them around and they're begging for more. They all seem to enjoy to be over there," said the neighbor who doesn't want to give her name.

His attorney had argued that Meyer suffered from post traumatic stress disorder from fighting in a war.
