Omaha, NE - Douglas County records the year's first death due to the West Nile virus.
The victim is a man over the age of 65 who traveled to Texas before getting sick with the disease. A news release from the Douglas County Health Department says: "He had been hospitalized and was making progress against the illness."
Health Director Dr. Adi Pour says, "We are saddened to hear of this man's passing. Let this serve as a reminder that everyone should follow the recommendations for protecting yourself against mosquito bites."
People become infected after a mosquito that's been feeding on an infected bird bites them.
Dr. Pour says even though the county has had a hot and mostly dry summer, mosquitoes breed in permanent water and remain a threat.
