Infant May Be Blinded By Bleach; Mother Gets Probation

Children Alone At Home

CREATED 2:24 PM

Fremont, NE - A 26-year-old mother was sentenced to 18 months probation after her son sprayed bleach into her infant daughter's face. The two children had been left home alone.

The girl was three months old at the time and, according to court papers, could have permanent vision problems.

Police say Tricha Speights left her children--a two-year-old boy and a three-month-old girl--alone in their apartment  "for a long period of time" on May 5th. When she returned, she found the boy had sprayed infant Gracelynn in the face with bleach.

The baby was rushed by medical helicopter to the Childrens Medical Center's intensive care unit. According to court records, she suffered first degree burns on her face, "her vision could be affected and damage could be permanent."

Neighbors told police that Speights had left her children unattended for long periods several times. One time she reportedly left the infant girl sleeping in her car unattended, with the windows rolled up. The temperature was 88 degrees.

Speights was charged with two counts of child neglect. The boy has been placed in a foster home and a juvenile court judge will look at the case again in January.
