Pleasant Dale, NE - A man who faced up to 10 years in prison for shooting two dogs he thought were "running loose" was sentenced to two years probation.
The dogs--Duchess, a chocolate lab and Kenai, a great pyrenees--were family pets.
The animal shootings were the focus of an investigation by KMTV Action 3 News' Craig Nigrelli. Craig found that Seward county--where the killings happened--does not have a "no leash" law so dogs are free to roam.
58-year-old Gerald Vlasin originally was charged with two counts of intentional cruelty to animals after a neighbor found the animal carcasses in a field. In a plea deal, Vlasin's two felonies were reduced to misdemeanors.
Court papers show Vlasin admitted to finding the dogs on a county road and shooting them. He said he shot them because they were running loose.
Judge Alan Gless sentenced Vlasin to two years probation. He also has to pay a $1200 fine.
Vlasin pleaded no contest to the two charges of cruelly mistreating an animal, as well as four other misdemeanors: false reporting, criminal mischief, and two counts of improper disposal of a carcass.
