London 2012: Ben Ainslie hails man arrested for painting post box gold as a 'legend'

Ainslie, the most successful sailor in Olympic history with four gold and one silver medal from five Games, has lived in Lymington for 12 years and is an honorary life member of the Royal Lymington Yacht Club.

Mr Smith, a father-of-three who runs a pub and restaurant in the town, said: “I did it because I’m a passionate sportsman, I think the Olympics have been brilliant, Ben’s achievements have been outstanding.

“We’ve got to recognise these people and say thank you.”

Mr Smith, who is currently on bail, said he used two tins of car paint to turn the post box gold.

Menwhile David Cameron has backed calls to paint a post box gold in Henley on Thames, home of the Leander Club, whose rowers won six medals at London 2012.

So far Henley has been denied the honour by Royal Mail because none of the medallists were born in Henley. Leander athletes won two golds at the Olympics - Anna Watkins in the women's double scull and Pete Reed and Alex Gregory in the men's coxless four.

Mr Cameron said: "Royal Mail have had an excellent Olympic games. They've produced these stamps, they are painting the pillar boxes.

"I don't know who is doing the thinking for them but I think they've been really on the ball so why not Henley?"
