Nebraska's MDA Ambassador: Zach Jorgensen

CREATED 3:43 PM

Meet Zach Jorgensen, just a typical 15 year old going to study period from Geography class.

Only Zach crosses the hallway in his wheelchair.

"The way we noticed something was wrong with him is because he would fall a lot, and when he would fall he would have to crawl to a couch or to a chair or something to kind of help himself get up."

At the age of 4, Zach was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, unexpected, and difficult to handle for the Jorgensen family.

"It was very difficult when he was diagnosed, I was actually, just found out that I was pregnant with our other son Gunner, so a lot of emotions going there."

Joel and Shelley were lost, until they found the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

"We couldn't have gone through this journey that we've gone through, without them."

From the beginning, and every step of the way the MDA helps families like the Jorgensens.

Offering support and guiding them in the right direction, anything and everything to help their son.

"They know exactly when to send him to see what doctor, and watch this and watch that and yeah they've been tremendous because we were lost when we first found out he had muscular dystrophy, so they've done a tremendous job of taking care of us."

Even one step further, Zach accepted an honor, as the official Nebraska Ambassador for the MDA.

"This year's been a very fun year for him, and for us just you know being able to go out and spread the word and you know help raise money in any way we can again just so they can try to find a cure for this horrible disease."

As the spokesman for the association, Zach never holds back. He talks about his disease and tries to help families understand, anything to give back to an organization that helps him so much.

"You know Muscular Dystrophy has been a huge part of our lives ever since he was diagnosed, and we always try to do whatever we can."

Not only is the MDA a shoulder to lean on for the Jorgensens, but so is their tight knit community of Wayne.

"Living in small town doesn't limit resources for Zach, the Jorgensens say the community has also been there, every step of the way."

"Small community? I mean a lot of people that live in this community Joel and I have gone to school with and graduated with and we've known our whole lives I mean it's just one big family."

A family to be proud of, Wayne and the MDA are there for those who need it, to help cope with the challenges that lie ahead.
