The students at Assumption-Guadalupe, carry heavy hearts for the loss of a friend.
"Mmm, I feel kind of sad."
Almost every day Gilberto Hernandez-Vazquez, the ice cream man, walked up and down the streets near the South Omaha school selling his popsicles.
"I was very upset, because he used to be a very nice man and he was just so easy to get along with and I was pretty upset."
Hernandez-Vazquez was killed one week ago today, while pushing his ice cream cart near 19th and Y.
Well known in the South Omaha community, and especially at Assumption Guadalupe.
"Most of our students knew him, he was the ice cream man. He'd be on the corner here across the street after school so they all recognized him he was a fixture in the community."
The students, sad for his family, wanted to do something to help.
"We can like help his family by raising money."
A rummage sale outside the schoo, will do just that. Reaching out to a family in a time of need...
"He was such a nice man, and I liked his lollipops."
"Because he was a nice guy and he didn't deserve to die."
The students at Assumption-Guadalupe will never forget the ice cream man.
