Six Hour Standoff Ends In Bellevue

Suspect fired several shots at officers

CREATED 9:12 PM

Bellevue, NE - After a six hour standoff in a Bellevue neighborhood, Bellevue Police handcuffed a man and took him into custody. Investigators were called to 2508 Alberta Street around 1:30 Friday afternoon, after a man started shooting a gun.

Steve Burton lives next door to the suspect. He says one of the man’s friends started pounding on his front door. Burton said the suspect’s dad was inside the home when the shots were fired. "He came out holding a couple of shot guns that he was trying to get out of the house, and I called 911," explained Burton.

"As officers responded they were taking an approach to the residence that was somewhat safe for them behind cover and along the sides of the houses,” said Bellevue Police Captain David Stukenholtz. “As they got close they heard two more shots, and they took cover and two more shots rang out again. At that time he'd shot at a pick-up that two officers were hiding behind."

Stukenholtz says none of the officers were hit. Negotiators and armed swat teams set up a large perimeter, and tried to get the man to give himself up. Capt. Stukenholtz said the suspect took aim when officers deployed a tactical measurer. "He shot at remote control cars that we deployed to view one of the doors," said Stukenholtz.

Around 6:30 investigators decided it was time to take action. They shot several rounds of tear gas inside the home with the hopes of the suspect coming outside. Burton said the Sergeant asked him to go into his basement while teams escalated the situation. "They shot about 15-20 gun shots and you could see they broke all the glass out of the house.”

Officers never fired any lethal shots toward the suspect. Those who know the troubled man are thankful. "This is an incident, it's not a death and that's the best part of it all,” said Burton.

Bellevue Police have not released the suspects name or arrested him. No injuries were reported during the stand-off.
