AG Secretary Meets with Nebraska & Iowa Producers

Tom Vilsack announces plans to help with drought recovery

Sarpy Co., NE - Seeing how the drought has damaged corn and soybean crops is upsetting. But hearing the stories from farmers and ranchers is even more powerful. "We're a resilient bunch and I think we're gonna get through this difficult time," Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said.

A tough time that brought Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to the metro to announce plans to give producers the help they need to recover from the drought. "We're looking at lowering the interest rate on our disaster assistance loans, working with sister agencies like the SBA and credit unions to provide credit not only to producers but to small businesses that may be impacted," Vilsack said.

Relief farmers like Mark Roemer hopes comes soon. His crops are dry and his animals are running out of food. "Very dry, very dry, the animals have gone from lush pastures 60 days ago to nearly nothing to eat over the last six weeks," Mark Roemer said.

Vilsack says the Obama administration is doing everything it can to help the producers, but says the best thing that can happen in the short term: "would be for the House of Representatives to complete it's work on what I refer to as the food, farm and jobs bill that should contain comprehensive disaster assistance for both livestock and specialty crop producers," Vilsack said.
