Unseen version of The Shining to be released in the UK

Several back stories were removed for the European version, including details about protagonist Jack Torrance's (Nicholson) struggle with alcohol problems. A scene which was also cut included a group of skeletons sat round a table in the hotel.

Once dubbed 'the scariest film ever' The Shining follows Torrance who goes to a remote hotel with his family to act as the hotel's caretaker during the winter months while the building is closed to the public. Torrance begins to turn on his wife and young son, as his is plagued by strange happenings in the hotel.

The film was adapted from Stephen King's novel of the same name, written in 1977. Recently, the writer has talked about penning a sequel to the novel, called Dr Sleep, which centres on Jack Torrance's son, Danny Torrance, as an adult.

Warner Brothers had also been looking into creating a prequel to the film.

The Shining will air first on Halloween at the BFI and then will be released nationwide.
