Woman who Helped Charlie Rogers, Feeling Hurt & Betrayed

CREATED 4:27 PM

Word from Lincoln Police that Charlie Rogers' hate crime was a hoax, shocked the nation, but no more than the woman who helped her, the night it happened.

"I just don't understand it, I don't understand it."

At 4:00 one morning in July, Linda Rappl answered her door, to find Rogers naked and hands tied.

"And I called 911 and I was so shaken I don't remember exactly what I said."

She's lived across the street from Rogers for 6 years now, the two were close neighbors, and friends.

"Truly truly thought it was a hate crime."

Rappl too believed Rogers's story, but when she heard it was all a hoax, her heart sank.

"I felt betrayed, I felt saddened, I felt sick. I was just devastated to think that if this was a hoax that she would do that and implicate me by coming to my house."

She says the Charlie she knew, was a good person.

"If I'd be out raking my yard she'd come help me rake, she mowed my lawn for me she mowed the 2 neighbors on both sides of her she mowed their lawns because they didn't have lawn mowers."

Rappl says she doesn't want to believe her friend would make up a story like that...

"I'm hurt, I'm very hurt because I really liked her and I thought we had a good relationship as neighbors, and I would've done anything for her and she would've done anything for me that I needed."

Rappl doesn't regret helping a neighbor in need, she just wishes she knew why.
